A River With History, A Marina With Heart

Long before Skipjack Cove became a marina, the Sassafras River was already a working waterway; a place shaped by tides, trade, and generations of Chesapeake watermen. The river’s protected coves and deep channels made it a natural haven for boats traveling between the Upper Chesapeake Bay and Maryland’s Eastern Shore communities. It’s this setting, quiet, scenic, and naturally sheltered, that laid the foundation for Skipjack Cove.

The marina takes its name from the Chesapeake Bay skipjack, the iconic wooden workboats once used for oyster dredging throughout the Bay. That spirit of durability and connection to the river still defines Skipjack Cove today.

As recreational boating grew on the Chesapeake, Skipjack Cove emerged as a destination designed not just for dockage, but for living on the water. Thoughtfully positioned within a wide, protected cove, the marina was developed to provide boaters with safe harbor, deep-water access, and a sense of permanence; a place where people didn’t just pass through, but stayed.

Over time, Skipjack Cove evolved into a true marina community. Slips became seasonal homes. Neighbors became friends. Days on the river turned into traditions; poolside afternoons, waterfront dinners, holiday weekends, and shared sunsets that define life along the Sassafras. Amenities were added with intention, reinforcing the idea that the marina itself should be as enjoyable as the cruising beyond it.

Today, Skipjack Cove stands as one of the largest and most established marina communities on the Sassafras River, blending Chesapeake heritage with modern comforts. While the boats may be newer and the amenities more refined, the heart of Skipjack Cove remains unchanged: a place built around the water, shaped by the river, and sustained by the people who call it home.

Skipjack Cove isn’t just part of the Sassafras River’s history; it’s part of its ongoing story.
